Cats for cats to watch. This comment is so hilarious. It’s just so absurd. Yes, I’m sure something like 90% of videos on USB or HDD are pirated. But almost every single 4K blu ray you buy will have a digital download code available. Creating this distinction as grounds for preventing apps that allow you to locally play video files is ridiculous. If Microsoft decided to get rid of the media player for whatever reason that would be one thing. But every other app that is designed to play local content is third party. Microsoft doesn’t oversee the development and maintenance of VLC. VLC oversees maintenance of their app for Xbox. It does exactly what it says it does, which is play local media. No indication of piracy involved, so Microsoft has no reason to remove it. Also, companies that make and/or distribute content don’t worry about pirating nearly as much as they used to. With streaming services having risen to the top as most preferred way to consume content, they are WAY less concerned than they used to be. It’s easier for people to pay for streaming services and get rid of cable than to pirate stuff. In fact, music pirating has gone almost down to nothing. Why? Because all music you could think of is widely available among multiple services within a reasonable price. Piracy is a direct reflection of the market. If people can get it easily and affordably, they will. If they can’t, they will pirate. Simple as that. Look at HBO Max. They’re taking a risk entering a market that has been established at this point. If they have a wide enough library of content to get people to continually pay $15 a month then they might do well. Disney+ is struggling because it turns out a platform that’s dedicated to children’s content isn’t something that people are willing to pay $7 a month for every single month. But add up all of these - Netflix, Hulu, Prime, Disney+, HBO Max it gets expensive. And when people have all of these services and they can’t find a movie they want to watch? A small percentage of people are going to pirate it! This is a reality, and these companies know that. They just want to maximize profit by choosing the right streaming services to contract their content to, like Hulu paying $130 million for Seinfeld. They know they are taking a risk if they choose not to contract with these well known streaming services to house their content. And all of this isn’t even mentioning services like Amazon removing legally purchased movies from peoples libraries! If these multi billion dollar corporations that distribute content are taking a hit from piracy, fuck them! Fuck the moral implication. Piracy is a reflection of the market. There were years of piracy being extremely low, with music piracy having been almost completely eliminated. The fact that there’s a slow rise of piracy again is a reflection of mistakes that are being made on their part.
